Uganda’s Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oulanyah has died while undergoing treatment at Seattle, Washington in the United States.
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni announced the death of the legislator in an emotional farewell message.
“It is with a lot of sadness that I announce the death of the Rt. Hon. Jacob Oulanyah, the Speaker of Parliament. I got information of this sad news at 10.30 am, East African time from People that have been with him and the doctor that was caring for him in the intensive care unit,” he wrote on Twitter.
“He was a good Cadre. I delayed the announcement so that his children would be informed first,” he added.
Speaker Oulanyan is said to have been flown out of the country on February 4th for specialized healthcare after doctors at Mulago Hospital, where he was first admitted in January, referred him.
His trip to the United States drew a lot of criticism from Ugandans in diaspora, who claimed it cost taxpayers $500,000 (about Shs1.7 billion) to fly him there on a Uganda Airlines Bus A330-800 neo with registration code 5X-NIL.
After defeating former Speaker Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, the 56-year-old was elected Speaker of the 11th Parliament for the first time on May 24, 2021.
The lawmaker had prior served as Deputy Speaker of Parliament under Rebecca Kadaga from May 2011 until May 2021.
He served as a speaker for 9 months and 24 days.
