Jobs that don’t allow tattoos

For years, tattoos have been a controversial subject in the workplace.

While jobs might be more lenient now when it comes to workplace tattoos, there are still some occupations that don’t allow them, and now many want to know what those jobs are.

What jobs don’t allow tattoos?

In the United States, there are millions of people who have tattoos on their bodies.

Because tattoos are becoming more and more common, many Americans have urged workplaces to change their outdated policies.

However, there are still some occupations that don’t allow their employees to have tattoos or require them to cover up.

While these occupations might vary based on the state, Authority Tattoo reports that the most common jobs that don’t allow tattoos are:

  • Law enforcement officers
  • Teachers
  • Bankers
  • Housekeepers
  • Healthcare professionals
  • Front Office Administrators

Can I get fired for having a tattoo in the US?

When tattoos are banned in the workplace, it’s often listed as part of the company’s dress code, which employees agree to follow when accepting any position.

There are also no federal laws making it illegal, meaning that companies can fire employees for having tattoos.

What are the rules against discrimination in the workplace?

As part of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, employers cannot discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin, which is why many companies apply their anti-tattoo policy consistently throughout the workplace.

Over the years, many have tried to argue that workplace tattoo restrictions are a violation of the First Amendment, however, that is simply not the case.

One of the few tattoo exemptions is linked to religion and is often applied if an employee’s religion requires them to have certain tattoos.

Employers will often grant religious exemptions, so long as it does not create an undue hardship for the employer, the RKPT Law Firm notes.
