In a recent interview, Lionel Messi discussed his departure from Barcelona and claimed he was forced to do so after being informed that staying at the Camp Nou was not an option.
Lionel Messi had planned to leave Barcelona in 2020, but he stayed. He was forced to leave after a year even though he wanted to stay. The impacts can still be seen today.
Messi moved to Barcelona when he was just a youngster and stayed there for 20 years. At the time, he was 34. With 672 goals in 778 games, he became the club’s all-time appearance and leading scorer during that time. He won four Champions League titles, 11 LaLiga titles, and six times was named the best player in the world (and for a seventh time since leaving.) It was inconceivable to see Messi playing for another team or Barcelona without him.
Frenkie de Jong of Barcelona, who was collecting up family from the airport, was initially skeptical when he heard the news. Striker Sergio Aguero was with Spanish Twitch broadcaster Ibai Llanos when the news first broke. In part to play with his longtime friend Messi, he had only recently joined for Barcelona, and like De Jong, he didn’t believe it.
