Cristiano Ronaldo accidentally hailed his move to “South Africa” and not Saudi Arabia during his first Al-Nassr press conference.
Ronaldo, 37, has been officially unveiled after signing a two-and-a-half year contract with the Riyadh-based club worth a reported £177million a year. Before being presented to the fans in an open training session, he faced the media.
But he suffered a slip of the tongue as he said: “For me it’s not the end of my career to come into South Africa, this is what I want to change – and to be honest I don’t really worry about what the people say.”
Naturally, viewers were quick to pounce on the error and give him some stick. One tweeted: “Ronaldo said “SOUTH AFRICA” instead of Saudi Arabia during his interview. Blud doesn’t even know where he is.”
Another joked: “Did Cristiano Ronaldo just call Saudi Arabia..South Africa..they bout to come after him.”
“So Ronaldo says his coming to South Africa to play. You heard it here first,” quipped a third, while a fourth commented: “Plot Twist: Cristiano Ronaldo announces he’s actually heading to South Africa and the DStv Premiership.”
Ronaldo completed his medical earlier on Tuesday to finalise his move which comes following his acrimonious exit from Manchester United earlier this season.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner claimed he had several offers from around the globe, including many from Europe – despite failing to find a Champions League club who were interested in signing him.
He said: “I am so proud at making this big decision in my life and my career. My work in Europe is done. I played for all the most important clubs.
“I had many opportunities in Europe. Many clubs in Brazil, Australia, in the US and even Portugal. For me this is a good chance with my knowledge and experience to grow very important clubs.”
